Happy birthday, Paul Cézanne!
Impressionist painter Paul Cézanne was born on this day in 1839. Cézanne made a major contribution to the development of modern art by emphasizing the painting as an autonomous object, freed from the service of literature, anecdote, psychology, or symbol. Although Cézanne based his art on observation, his ideas about pictorial structure were influential to Picasso and Braque in their development of abstract art in the early twentieth century.
